In-Home Summer Brain Training for ADD/ADHD

In-home, evidence-based neurofeedback training can be used this summer to reduce or eliminate medications for ADD/ADHD, helping with the fall school semester. Neurofeedback is a noninvasive training process that teaches the brain to make long-term changes that contribute to optimal functioning, naturally. Tina Buck, Ph.D., LPC, CEO of Biobalance Integrated Wellness, LLC, offers this complementary and alternative intervention for ADD/ADHD.

Neurofeedback is a process of measuring brainwave activity while software guides the brain to self-regulate the different frequencies. Like using training wheels when learning to ride a bicycle, neurofeedback is used to guide the brain until trainees can repeat the learned behaviors independently. This results in improved focus, attention, behaviors and confidence. Just like riding a bicycle, once the brain stabilizes through training, the results are lasting.

Medication and behavioral interventions currently are the primary approach for treatment of ADD/ADHD; however, the long-term effects of stimulant medications include double the risk for cardiovascular events, stunted or delayed growth and an increase in social and mental health problems.

“Neurofeedback is a safe, effective intervention that can complement or replace traditional methods. The American Academy of Pediatrics rates neurofeedback a best-practice intervention for ADD/ADHD,” explains Buck. “Both practitioners and parents can attest to positive changes in children’s functioning, school performance and confidence. In fact, a meta-analysis of over 50 studies found that half of children trained in neurofeedback functioned significantly better, often reducing their medication dosages, while the other half eliminated medications altogether.”
