What is Reiki and How Does it Work?

Lydia Isenberger

Reiki, a very powerful system of energy healing which originated in the Tibetan Monasteries, was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in the 19th century. Reiki is the science and art of activating, directing and applying the natural universal life force energy to promote healing and to maintain a state of positive wellness.

To put it succinctly, reiki is a Universal Life Force energy which is safely used at any time, any place to heal at all levels of being, and since universal means applicable or common to all purposes, conditions or situations, it is then safely used to heal humans, pets, plants and situations. Reiki releases emotional and mental blockages, relieves pain and stimulates the immune system. In addition, reiki energy transcends time and space, and has an intelligence of its own and therefore knows where and when healing is needed.

Reiki works by the laying of hands from the reiki practitioner to the client. The client remains dressed, and is either sitting or lying down on a reiki table. Once the practitioner has had a Reiki Initiation, the energy transferal happens automatically when hands are placed on another individual with the intent of healing. After a healing, most clients experience a deep feeling of relaxation and well-being.

There are three levels of reiki. Level I teaches how to do healing on self and others as long as the client is present. Level II teaches three symbols and sounds, energy exercises and how to do distance healing. Levels III and IV are for practitioners who wish to become Reiki Masters/Teachers.

Dr. Lydia Isenberger, Certified Reiki Master, has written two reiki manuals, Quan Yin Reiki and Mayan Reiki. She has been teaching and practicing reiki for over two decades in the U.S. and Europe, and is currently teaching all levels of reiki and other metaphysical courses at Unity of Tucson Church.
