Understanding the Importance of Uranus in Our Astrological Natal Chart

Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, is 1.7 billion miles from the sun. It’s about 14.5 times bigger than the Earth. The planet does have rings that are comprised of rock and dust and are held in orbit around Uranus by its intense gravitational pull. Discovered by William Herschel in 1781, it was given the name Uranus, meaning the father of Saturn. The planet tilts on its side as it orbits the sun—taking 84 years to complete one orbit. Uranus has at least 27 moons that are visible to scientists.

So, what does Uranus mean in our natal chart or by transit? This planet represents freedom, independence, eccentricity; all technology comes under Uranus as well as the study of astrology. Uranus wants nothing to do with the status quo or traditional rules or expectations by society; it can act very rebelliously, abrupt and aloof. The energy is very detached, and can act very quickly without any warning, so often it’s shocking to others and we may be shocked by our own actions.

The energy is future-oriented and masculine. We all have masculine and feminine energy within us, different expressions of how energy manifests. Masculine energy rules the elements of fire and air and is future-oriented, willing to jump in and take risks and is more assertive. Feminine energy rules the elements water and earth and is connected to our past. It is more cautious, shy and nurturing, will take its time to start something new and is concerned with security.

Uranus can give flashes of genius and amazing creativity. Like a light bulb going off in the mind, we might know the answer or what must happen next. This doesn’t mean the person can manifest this idea in the world, unless there is some earth and or a strong Saturn in the chart.

The big lesson with Uranus aspects and transits especially to our personal planets, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, is to inspire us to be more our authentic selves. We can develop a new sense of self with a Sun/Uranus aspect or transit. This may mean the person decides to change careers or creates a new business that has his unique stamp on it. It also can mean they have a difficult time with their boss or father or other men in their lives. It’s best if they can work for themselves and if not at least have a lot of autonomy in their jobs so they can work on their own.

People with transiting Uranus aspecting their sun start to have a different look. Their tastes in colors and styles can change and their energy may be sped up so they never sit still, and are easily bored by any routine. They can be impatient with anything they feel isn’t new and exciting and often they’re not sleeping well. Their nervous system is sped up, so they seem to vibrate at a higher frequency than the rest of us.

When Uranus comes along and transits one of our personal planets, Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Mercury, expect big and unexpected changes. If Uranus is aspecting one’s Venus, this will affect our relationships with women, and our taste and style of clothing may change.

A lot will depend on how someone likes change with a Uranus transit. A person who likes change and variety will find this transit to be an invigorating ride. A person that doesn’t like change and is more into their security and routines, then this transit can feel very upsetting and at times shocking.

This transit is allowing us to break free from old, outworn patterns and to create a new, more authentic expression of who we are. It can be a bumpy ride, but it can also feel very liberating, giving creativity a boost.
