September is National Falls Prevention Month
Heather Chalon, MPH, Master Trainer at Tai Chi for Health Institute, wants to remind us that September is National Falls Prevention Month. Falls are not a normal part of aging, yet falls and their associated costs are part of our nation’s largest health expenditure, and the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls are costly—in dollars and in quality of life.
Through practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based balance and strength programs such as Tai Chi for Arthritis for Fall Prevention (TCAFP) with certified instructors, the number of falls among seniors can be reduced substantially. The National Council on Aging, of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommends TCAFP as a proven system to help prevent falls and reoccurrence among those who have fallen.
Classes and workshops are available locally both for personal development, and as a program to learn so one can share health benefits with others while taking good care of oneself. TCAFP is safe, effective and enjoyable, and the program has been proven to help with overall health and sense of well-being.
Chalon is dedicated to raising awareness and developing a strong Tai Chi for Health community in Southern Arizona as a self-care modality that crosses all age groups, health conditions and stages of life, bringing people together in wellness.
