Terry Bowman is a plein air artist who firmly believes art should be fun. For her, painting outdoors in the Sonoran Desert is part creative pursuit, part adventure and occasionally part survival sport. Armed with an easel, oil paints and plenty of optimism, she heads out to capture the desert’s ever-changing light before the Arizona sun decides it is time to turn up the heat.
A graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in fine arts, Bowman has spent years developing her skills, but what keeps her coming back is the joy of the process. Whether she is chasing dramatic shadows, glowing desert colors or simply enjoying the birds and breezes, Bowman finds magic in every painting day—even the windy ones.

Painting outside means accepting that nature is a co-artist. A sudden gust of wind may redecorate a freshly painted sky with a few leaves. Curious insects sometimes decide to inspect the artwork up close. And the light? It changes so quickly that a painter learns to work fast or risk painting a completely different scene from the one she started.
Bowman also knows that setting up an easel in public is like putting up a giant sign that says, “Come talk to me!” Passersby often stop with questions such as, “How long did that take?” or the always-popular, “Can you paint me into the picture?” She welcomes the conversations—they are part of the experience.
