Learn to Become Skillfully Aware

Feb 02, 2015 12:01PM

Dr. Mark Pirtle

Dr. Mark Pirtle teaches a course, Skillfully Aware, in which students learn about the causes and mindfulness-based remedies for stress in six consecutive weekly classes. Students learn about the art and science of self-change and healing and are given a step-by-step framework for achieving more happiness and peace in daily life.

Stress and the illnesses that come with it are epidemic in our society,” says Pirtle. “Seven of every 10 doctor appointments can be attributed to stress. However, meditation and mindfulness have been found to be a remedy for stress and stress illnesses. Studies prove that meditation and mindfulness bring about many positive effects, including amplified feelings of well-being and stronger, more connected relationships. Additionally, meditation and mindfulness reduce both physical and mental pain, rumination, anxiety, depression and emotional reactivity and compulsivity.”

Pirtle is a stress illness specialist who teaches at Sierra Tucson, Miraval Resort and the fellowship for Center for Integrative Medicine, at the University of Arizona. He is currently making two documentary films on the topic.
