Medicare Plan Changes Outside Open Enrollment

Most Medicare beneficiaries cannot change plans after the Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7, but exceptions may apply. Certain life events can qualify individuals for a Special Enrollment Period, allowing plan changes outside the usual window. Those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans also have a separate opportunity to make adjustments early in the year.

Key opportunities to change Medicare coverage include the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7, with changes effective January 1 and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31, available only to those already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Special Enrollment Periods are available year-round when triggered by specific circumstances.

Common reasons for a Special Enrollment Period include moving to a new address inside or outside a plan’s service area, losing other health coverage such as Medicaid or employer-sponsored insurance, moving into or out of a nursing home or long-term care facility, or being affected by a declared disaster or emergency. Individuals who qualify for Medicaid or Extra Help or those with certain chronic conditions may change Medicare plans on a monthly basis.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to review their options carefully to ensure continued access to needed care and coverage.
