You’re the Guest of Honor

Jun 30, 2026 06:31AM ● By Deb Beroset
We all know how to get ready for a guest of honor. When someone we love is coming to stay, we pay a particular kind of attention. We wonder what they would enjoy. We notice what might make them comfortable—the good soap, fresh flowers, their favorite thing waiting in the refrigerator. We anticipate them. We want their arrival to feel like a pleasure.

So here is a question worth sitting with: When did you last turn that quality of attention toward yourself?

Most of us, if we are honest, live as the help at our own party. We pour the care outward—to children, partners, clients, friends and the people who depend on us—fluently and generously, without being asked. Then we tend to ourselves with whatever attention is left over, which on a full day is often none at all. We are the last to be considered in our own lives. We seat ourselves in the back.

What if, instead, you were the guest of honor? Not in the bubble-bath, treat-yourself sense. This is steadier and deeper than a splurge. It is a quality of attention. It is turning toward your own life the warm, curious, delighting regard you so easily extend to someone you love and asking the questions you would ask about them. What would actually delight me? What would make me feel at home in my own days? What small thing, if I came upon it, would feel like a welcome?

Start somewhere ordinary, because most of life is ordinary—ordinary mornings, ordinary drawers, ordinary corners we pass a hundred times. Take the kitchen counter. The usual voice says, I should really clear this off—a small, nagging should that never quite gets done. But the guest-of-honor question is a different one:

What would make me happy to wake up to?

Picture it. Coming out in the morning to a clear, serene counter, light in the window, the coffee ready, the day beginning with a small, real pleasure instead of a small, real reproach. Suddenly, you are not doing a chore. You are preparing a welcome for someone who matters. That someone is you, tomorrow morning.

This, I think, is what “good vibes” actually are once you get underneath the phrase. Not something vague in the air that you wait around to receive. They are the felt quality of a life you have made good to live inside—built, on purpose, out of small choices to delight rather than merely to manage. A good vibe is something you can extend. And the first person who gets to receive it can be you.

Let me name the harder part plainly, because it is usually the real obstacle. Many of us were quietly taught that turning this kind of attention on ourselves is selfish—that our own delight belongs at the bottom of the list, after everyone else has been served. So we learn to run on fumes and call it virtue.

But honoring yourself is not the same as indulging yourself, and it is not vanity. It is the thing that keeps you from running dry. You cannot pour warmth from an empty pitcher, and you are allowed—genuinely allowed—to be one of the people your own life is good to.

None of this asks for a free weekend or a budget. It asks for a question, put to one small place at a time. One drawer. One corner. One hour of your day that you make beautiful, easeful or true for the one who has to live there.

So here is the invitation. Sometime today, choose one ordinary thing, and instead of asking what you should do about it, ask what would delight the guest of honor. Then make it so. Set the place. Pour the good thing. Let the welcome be for you.

You are not the help at your own table. You are the one the whole celebration is for.
