Two Hours A Week Changes Everything

There’s a reason you feel different when you step outside. Researchers studied nearly 20,000 people and found that just two hours a week in nature—parks, trails, beaches and woodlands—was enough to make a meaningful difference in how people felt physically and emotionally. Stress hormones dropped. Sleep improved. Moods lifted.

Simply being outside produced the same emotional benefits as a formal meditation session. So for those of you who have always wanted to meditate, but just can’t find a way to be successful at it, here’s a viable alternative!
And the kicker? The effects aren’t just in the moment. Some studies suggest the immune boost from a single outdoor visit can linger for days. Your body takes the gift and keeps working with it long after you’ve gone back inside.
One two-hour stretch or several short spurts—the benefit shows up either way. Two hours a week. That’s all.

So why don’t we do it more?

Somewhere along the way, most of us stopped feeling like we had permission to slow down enough to actually enjoy being outside. We drive past the trailhead. We eat lunch at our desks. We save the long walk for “someday when things calm down.”

News flash. Things rarely calm down on their own. You have to create the calm.
Here are five simple ways to get two “outdoor” hours in your week so you can create your own calm:
• Commit to walking 20 minutes after one meal each day.
• Play in your garden or yard for 30 minutes, four times a week.
• Find an evening outdoor fitness class for  an hour and then watch the sunset.
• Head to a local park, stadium or outdoor amphitheater with stairs and spend 60 minutes walking and climbing, twice a week.
• Explore a new outdoor destination each week. Visit a different trail, nature preserve, botanical garden, lake or park.

And some of my favorite go-tos: head to cooler elevations, take a hike each weekend, schedule a morning walk and talk with a friend, hit the farmers market, ride your bike, or walk a labyrinth.

Stepping into the great outdoors is more than just a pleasant break from your day, it’s your body craving restoration and trying to recalibrate itself and even heal itself.

Two hours a week is the starting point. But even one intentional hour is an act of radical self-care.
