Take a Gratitude Walk

What if the next walk could do more than just add to a daily step count?

A gratitude walk is a simple way to shift attention from life’s demands toward what’s already good in life.

Here’s how it works. Start with 10 to 20 minutes. Walk around the neighborhood, through a park or simply around an office building. Keep the phone in a pocket and let the mind slow down.

During the walk, intentionally notice things to be grateful for.

It might be something big: a loved one, good health, a meaningful relationship or an opportunity that has come along.

Or it might be wonderfully ordinary:
• The warmth of the sun.
• A good cup of coffee waiting at home.
• A funny text from a friend.
• The sound of birds.
• Strong legs carrying someone down the sidewalk.

The goal isn’t to suggest that everything is wonderful. Life doesn’t work that way. Instead, the practice gives the brain a few minutes to focus on what is working rather than automatically scanning for what’s wrong.

Then end the walk with one question:
“What good thing in life might be going unnoticed right now?”
Changing perspective doesn’t require changing circumstances. It starts by changing what a person chooses to notice.

Rather than simply thinking, “That sounds nice,” the next step is to put on walking shoes, step outside and spend 10 minutes deliberately looking for what’s good in life.
