Rooted in Gratitude
During a long, dry summer, a desert tree may look unchanged. Its leaves still reach toward the sun. Its branches still move with the wind.
But beneath the ground, another story has been unfolding.
Its roots have been searching—deeper, wider, finding what will sustain the life above them.
Gratitude can grow that way in a human being.
Then life happens.
There may be an empty chair where someone once sat. A door may close that cannot be reopened. A future once imagined with certainty suddenly disappears.
Gratitude does not ask a person to deny the hurt. It does not insist that everything happens for a reason.
Instead, its roots reach deeper.
Beneath sorrow, there may be love. Beneath disappointment, something learned. Even after goodbye, something precious may remain.
A person begins to discover gratitude in what remains: the love that was given, the strength that appeared when it was needed, the hands that reached out, the clearer knowledge of what truly matters.
Eventually, gratitude becomes more than a response. It becomes the ground from which a person meets whatever comes.
Difficult seasons will come. When they do, those deep roots of gratitude may be what holds a human being upright.
