Connecting with the Earth through Walking Meditation
In Ayurveda, it is believed that energy enters the left side of the body and is released from the right side of the body. Using this simple principle we can turn any outdoor walk, whether hiking in the desert or simply walking to the end of the driveway to collect the mail, into a healing, with just a few simple steps.
Start walking. As the left foot first comes into contact with the ground, begin to inhale slowly. Continue inhaling for three steps—left, right, left. While inhaling, imagine that drawing the green, healing energies of the planet in through the sole of the left foot. Feel that energy moving up the leg and swirling through the body.
The next time the right foot comes into contact with the ground, begin to exhale. Continue exhaling for three steps—right, left, right. On exhale, imagine that the green energy that has been swirling through the body is now moving into the right leg, down to the foot and out through the sole of the foot, back into the earth. Repeat the cycle while continuing to walk. In, two, three… Out, two, three…
Eventually, we are able to move earth energy through the body with almost no conscious effort, whenever we walk. It becomes both a healing cleanse and a walking meditation.
