As the days get longer and the air fills with the scent of blooming flowers, many of us feel the urge to clean out closets, open the windows, and refresh our space. But spring cleaning doesn’t have to stop at your front door. Just like your home, your body benefits from a seasonal reset—especially your liver.

The liver is your body’s built-in detoxifier. Every day, it filters your blood, processes hormones, breaks down toxins, and supports your metabolism. It’s the ultimate multitasker, and yet it’s often overlooked until something goes wrong.

What’s more concerning is that liver issues are on the rise—even in people who don’t drink alcohol. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the most common liver condition in the United States, affecting nearly 1 in 3 adults. Even more shocking, it’s estimated that 1 in 10 children now have signs of fatty liver—largely driven by processed foods, sugary beverages, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Most people with early NAFLD don’t even know they have it. Symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, or hormonal imbalance can all be early signals that the liver needs support. Upper right quadrant pain or the sensation of fullness can be later signs. Often fatty liver is found on an ultrasound as an incidental finding. Normal liver enzymes do not exclude you from liver disease. Although the liver plays a vital role in health, it is often overlooked in the treatment of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is considered the season of the liver—a time of renewal, growth and upward movement. It’s the perfect time to support this vital organ and give your body the tools it needs to clear out the internal clutter that’s built up over the winter months.
Supporting your liver doesn’t mean doing harsh cleanses or restrictive diets. It starts with nourishing your body with liver-loving foods—think leafy greens, beets, lemon water, cruciferous vegetables, and herbal teas like dandelion and milk thistle. Adequate fiber, hydration and movement all help the liver do its job more efficiently.

Just as we feel lighter and clearer after organizing our homes, many people report clearer skin, better digestion, more stable moods, and renewed energy after a focused liver reset. Hormones begin to rebalance. Sleep improves. The body lets go of what it’s been holding onto.

If you’ve been feeling sluggish, inflamed or out of sync with your body, consider making this season one of true renewal—from the inside out. Give yourself the spring cleaning your body has been craving.
