Positive, Practical Spirituality at Unity

Jan 30, 2012 02:51PM

Unity Minister Eric Butterworth begins his classic book, Discover the Power Within You, with the following Hindu legend: “Once, there was a time that all people were gods, but they so abused their divine power that Brahma, the chief god, decided to take it away and hide it. But where?

“Some of the lesser gods said to bury it deep in the earth, but Brahma said, ‘No, the people would surely dig deep and find it.’ Perhaps in the ocean? ‘No, they will explore and find it there.’ How about on top of the highest mountain? Again, Brahma replied, ‘No, eventually they will climb every mountain.’ The lesser gods decided that there was no place secure enough to hide the power of divinity from humankind.

Then Brahma said, ‘Here is what we will do: we will hide it deep down in men and women themselves, for they will never think to look for it there.’ Ever since, the legend concludes, humans have been digging, climbing, diving, exploring, and searching for that divine power which is already within them.”
