Plantar Fasciitis: The Real Thing

Characterized by significant heel pain, Plantar Fasciitis is the result of an irritated and inflamed thick band of tissue across the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. The debilitating stabbing pain can make it difficult or near to impossible to walk. Sometimes the pain presents immediately when standing, but then gradually goes away on walking.

The tendon coming into the back of the heel usually becomes compressed over time, restricting the space in the heel. The foot itself turns inward, exposing the inside of the heel more on walking. The ongoing friction from rubbing the heel at this angle creates small tears in the fascia, exacerbating the irritation. Scar tissue develops at these tears in the fascia of the heel, the body’s way of protecting an area that is being traumatized. The shortening of the tendon in the back of heel also contributes to the misalignment of the foot overall, sometimes compromising the arch of the foot.

Plantar Fasciitis is both the cause and the effect of a misalignment occurring from other regions of the body or from other long-standing injuries, for example, from the hips, knees, pelvis, ribcage and back. A restructuring of the body includes the decompression of these injuries and their protective layers of scar tissue. These areas of the body may also include the anterior visceral organs in the thorax and pelvis, or old head injuries which tighten the neck and shoulders.

Visceral manipulation can be a very effective method to open areas adhered by scar tissue and restore integrity to the body’s alignment. Craniosacral therapy contributes to dissolving congealed regions of over-developed tissue which are binding bones and misaligning the body’s structural frame. These two methodologies, when integrated into a whole approach, encourage effective healing of the irritated and inflamed band of tissue at the heel itself. Treatment of one part of the body entails a more complete restoration of the body’s mobility, circulation and sense of well-being.
