What is Reiki?

Reiki is energy healing practitioners can use to affect our minds, bodies and spirits. Rei means “god wisdom” and ki means “higher power”. Reiki is a guided life force biofield energy that surrounds us and is within our body. Biofield regulates cellular function to our nervous system, reduces anxiety, promotes sleep and improves quality of life.

Reiki practice is based on “life force energy”, an energy that effects mind, body and spirit. The practitioner places their hands on or above a client’s body to facilitate that person’s healing energy. Distance Reiki is also used to connect energetically with someone. Self-Reiki is done by a practitioner on their own bodies to deepen their own energy as practitioner.

There are five principles of Reiki: Just for today, do not worry; Just for today, do not anger; Just for today, be humble; Just for today, be honest; Just for today, be compassionate toward yourself and others. These five principles work as mantras as well.

According to Mikado Usui, a Buddhist monk who created the Spiritual practice, “Reiki principles are the key to living a happy life and serve as medicine to the soul…Reiki principles are there to encourage us to embody the Reiki energy throughout the day, every day. They speak to the importance of one day at a time.”

Energy medicine aims to help the flow of energy and remove blocks, similar to acupuncture or acupressure. Reiki has been practiced for about 2,500 years. Reiki techniques channel universal energy known as ki and assist the body’s natural healing processes to develop emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
