Bone loss in women typically does not present with symptoms until damage has already occurred. During the critical seven- to 10-year phase of perimenopause and into early menopause, women experience accelerated bone loss, especially in the spine. This may be due to declining estrogen levels, existing health conditions and certain medications. Without appropriate hormone support, women can lose at least 30 percent of their bone mass by age 80. More than 50 percent of women will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime, and the risk of hip fracture doubles every five to six years between ages 65 and 85.
Conventional medicine recommends a DEXA bone scan starting at age 65, unless there is early surgical menopause or a strong family history of osteoporosis.
For women in their 30s to 50s, prevention is key. First, consider working with a practitioner who specializes in perimenopause and menopause care. Many primary care physicians and gynecologists have limited training in menopause hormone therapy, so seeking a specialist can provide more individualized guidance. A qualified practitioner can evaluate hormone levels, review medical history and recommend personalized treatment options.
Second, discuss an exercise and supplement plan. Research shows that weight-bearing exercise and strength training can increase bone mineral density and improve overall health. When combined with adequate protein intake and key nutrients such as vitamin D3, minerals and vitamin K2, these strategies can significantly support bone strength.
Taking a proactive approach is essential. Osteoporosis is preventable, not inevitable. While conventional, non-hormonal treatments can support bone health, they may carry side effects. A balanced approach that includes regular movement, a nutrient-rich diet and appropriate hormone support can help maintain strong, healthy bones for years to come.
