Benefits of Holistic Dentistry

Fig. 1

Holistic Dentistry emphasizes the use of nontoxic restoration materials while focusing on the unrecognized impact that dental toxins and hidden dental infections can have on overall health. According to those that focus on this field, cavities, infections, toxic or allergy-producing filling materials, root canals and misalignment of the teeth or jaw can have far-reaching effects throughout the body, recognizing that individual tooth sites relate to specific meridians, organs and vertebra levels.

The holistic approach and practice include the recognition that dentistry is a major key to optimal health and wellness. Holistic dentistry takes into account that total health is a whole greater than the sum of its parts and seeks to address each patient’s health accordingly. Some of the areas that are critically important for health include eliminating diseases and infection through restoring broken or decayed teeth; alternative to root canal therapy; safe mercury removal; highly protective protocols; conscientious general and cosmetic dentistry; non-invasive approach to TMJ; and dentistry without the use of fluoride.

It is important to align the whole body to support overall health (see fig. 1), as well as to determine the correct jaw position. Only when the body is in alignment is determining correct jaw position possible. Good health includes a balanced body and jaw alignment, meaning equal and opposing body and cranial motion that is free of old injury soft tissue strain patterns and compensations. Utilizing biocompatible, non-toxic materials reduces immune stress and harm to the system and avoids chronic exposure to non-compatible materials.

Holistic dentistry patients receive a thorough evaluation to address their unique needs and individualized treatment considerations. Treating the mouth and dental system for optimal health of the whole body is the main goal of holistic dentists. A holistic/biologic dental approach offers much more than a beautiful smile—it promises a future of overall health.
